No, I don't mean it died, I mean I can't find it. Went to get it out of its usual spot in the fridge and it wasn't there. Besides losing my starter, I'm losing my marbles.
I looked through the fridge and freezer, even in a few cupboards. No idea. Being old is swell.
I hear there is a triangle there, and maybe better weather. We have a tiny house and lose things more than we used to with twice the stuff. Go figure. But a starter? Tuning in for the mystery to be solved.
Never thought of that, although I used to have a turnip hole in my fridge. Every time I thought I had bought a turnip (rutabaga) it was never in the fridge. They just disappeared into the turnip hole.
Maybe you will find a bag with frozen pasta dough! We have looked high and low and it’s missing. Insane. I know I had it in my hand as I was searching the freezer for something else.
Sigh … meatballs are made and now to make more pasta dough.
I do it, but I do not like making pasta dough. It's hard work and hurts my back, so I certainly empathize that you had to start over.
You've got a better recollection of holding your dough, although it's just as gone. Obviously, you wonder if you put it somewhere without thinking, but the other possibility is it wasn't pasta dough you were holding, no matter how sure you are that it was. That could be incorrect, but sometimes I think we can literally see what we think we are seeing, and conversely look at something and not see it.
I picked up 1/2 loaf of the semolina bread. It’s about the color and shape of the lump of pasta. We remembered we shaped and ate the last piece.
My husband makes the pasta. He is so good and fast and makes 28oz at a time. That’s 4 meals for us at 3 1/2 oz each. He freezes the balls of dough and then it's quick & easy to roll and cut .
So mystery solved. I hope your new starter is happy. At least you have other options. 🙏
Good for you. I do remember your saying your husband was the pasta maker--and biscuits.
And biscotti . He’s the stir fry guy as well. He’s into the kinds of stuff I have no interest in so it works out great for a varied diet 😊
Thanks for letting me know that I'm not the only senior here.
At worst, you can start a new starter, which will be ready to use in a week and probably as good as it was in a month.
Or maybe it's an opportunity to try a rye culture: The Rye Baker Starter Instructions
Also lost my reply to you, Louis. Thanks for the link. I started a new one 3 days ago, but had no rye, ww or pineapple juice. Did have unbleached flour, though, and things seem to be doing fine. Never made a starter before; the lost one was given to me.
Let us know when you have the first successful bake with the new starter, and what you decide to name it.
Mine went a long time without a name. Then one day, while watching TV, the name came to me - Arye Melber.
...in your hand and put it down in a very unusual place without thinking. It happens. Retrace your steps from when you were sure you had it last. Were you feeding it and put it away with some other stuff while tidying up?
Found my husband's glasses in the freezer one time.
I remember the last time I had it, in the kitchen. I might check the garbage, if only to retrieve the container.
But you need your glasses to find them. Catch 22.
Don't worry. Every does it.
Hope you find your starter. Let us know if you do. I'd be curious to hear where you found it.
Although I seem to have a recollection of mixing the dregs of the starter with water and then adding flour, that does not seem to be the case. I was making a levain at the time and probably thought I'll empty the little starter container completely and clean it. I can scoop some levain out later to use for starter. I didn't scoop. Not sure what Tupperware I was using for the starter, so can't say it's in the cupboard either. I mean, I didn't miss it for a week.
Oh well. If my new starter doesn't pan out, I'll ask the gal who gave me the last one for some more. As long as she doesn't think I'm an unfit parent for losing it.
